Chapter Twenty

XANDER

The tall, broad-shouldered Celeste guard with cropped blonde hair pointed her aether gun at Paxton, and he froze with his hands in the air.

“Paxton?” She said, taking a step closer.

“Hi, Brianna.” Paxton’s voice was strained, and Xander didn’t dare exhale as the tension in the air pressed down on them.

The guard dropped her weapon and shook her head. “By the Elements, Paxton, I could have killed you! What are you doing back here, I thought you were on border patrol?”

Xander heard Paxton’s rush of breath and his own chest loosened just a little.

“I was, my shift just changed. I’m back at the citadel for a month.”

The female Celeste stepped out of the tunnel into the room and Paxton pressed himself against the open door, keeping the passageway open. They’d have to sneak through as quickly and quietly as they could if they were going to avoid being discovered by this guard.

“I thought you might write or something. I haven’t heard from you since you left.” The guard’s cheeks tinged pink and Xander flicked his eyes from her to Paxton without turning his head. Was he blushing too?

“Sorry, I just—I wasn’t sure if you wanted me to write,” Paxton rubbed the back of his neck, his eyes on the floor. The electricity in the air reminded Xander of the aether powering their invisibility suits. They needed to get moving now, or it could be too late.

“Of course, I did. How could you not have known, after…everything that happened.” Her voice had dropped an octave and Xander saw Paxton swallow hard.

Without warning, Paxton lurched forwards and kissed the female guard, leaving the door to slowly swing shut.

Xander, Rainer and Bazyl just managed to squeeze through the gap, with a final glimpse of the passionately-kissing couple, before they were immersed in total darkness.

Xander hoped Paxton’s friend would be too distracted to ask why he’d been at the door to the laboratory in the first place.

Standing in the cool, dark tunnel, Xander felt a sudden chill travel down his spine. They were deep in enemy territory now, with no back-up and no way out. He pushed the thought away and focused on the knowledge that Aria was somewhere nearby and possibly in mortal danger. She needed him to keep a clear head.

This was it. They’d come this far, just a little further to go.

The corridor sloped gently downwards, light suffusing the air as they walked deeper into the subterranean lair. After a few minutes, they reached a crossroads and Xander stopped.

“The light appears to be stronger to the left,” Bazyl said from somewhere behind him.

“Agreed. Rainer?” The last thing they needed was to get separated this early into their mission.

“Let’s go,” came the gruff reply. They set off down the corridor and, after a while, doors began to appear in the stone walls. Heavy-looking, metal doors with bio scanners instead of locks.

How on earth were they going to get inside? They should have planned this part better—or at all. Paxton should have warned them about the scanners, or provided them with an override code.
